After being newly prescribed a pessary ring for pelvic prolapse, I traveled on an airplane for over 15 hours. After several hours, the pessary became a bit uncomfortable. I went to the lavatory and removed it, cleaned it, placed it in the only thing I had available, which was a clear baggie, and safely tucked it into my carry on.
The next time I saw my pessary, (out of the baggie) it was being held in front of me, by a blue, gloved, customs agent, who had a quizzical look on his face. This is when the awkward question was asked. "May I ask what this is?" A million sarcastic comments flew through my mind, and luckily I chose, "Why it's a pessary." I could tell by the look on his face, an explanation was in order. I kept it short and to the point. "It is placed inside a woman's vagina so her insides don't fall out." "My doctor prescribed it."
My pessary floated down from the blue gloved hand, onto the cold metal table and rolled into my shoes.
